Day 3:
Lee's confidence was unaffected. On July 3, Lee, having failed on the right and the left side, planned an assault on Meade's center. A 15,000-man strong column under General George Pickett was organized, and Lee ordered a massive attack. The battle was over. Meade was holding his position and waiting for Lee's attack. Culp's Hill told XII Corps to drive Ewell's Forces out of the trenches at daylight. Then the Federals had a concentrated artillery bombardment which started a big battle. Lee had to modify his plans because he misunderstood his orders and instead was planning to turn the federals left. Lee had 12,000 men ready to destroy the Federal Center. At 1 p.m, Longstreet opened the great bombardment of the federal line. The battle was effetively over. There was about 23,000 Federal losses while there was about 20,ooo to 28,ooo losses or the confederates.
