DAY 1:
The battle first started at Marsh Creek 5:30 am. John Buford was the general that occupied Gettysburg. On july 1st the confederates sent out an army down the chambersburg road to occupy Gettysburg. Buford's army fought back to defend Gettysburg. General John F. Reynolds arrived on the field and decided to attack Herb. Early on in the battlle General Reynolds was killed. Howards strataegy was to delay the confederates long enough to make sure the rest of the federal army was concentrated. At 2 o clock in the afternoon Heth's decided to attack on I Corps. By 4 o clock in the morning both of the federal Corps retreated through Gettysburg to cemetary hill. Over thousands of men were killed and captured. When day 1 was over the confederetes finished with a victory, but the federal forces held on to their high ground south of Gettysburg.
